Scope and Content Standing stones at Ballymeanoch, Argyll and Bute The Ballymeanoch group of standing stones is arranged in two almost-parallel rows of four and two stones apiece, aligned on a north-west to south-east axis. Just to the north-west of the group stood a monolith, perhaps an outlying stone to the setting. The fragmentary remains of the outlying stone were removed following an excavation around the stump in 1977. The east face is decorated with cupmarks of varying sizes. One rather unusual feature is the hour-glass perforation, which was possibly man-made. Local stories, similar to those about Odin's Stone on Orkney, describe this stone being used in the sealing of bargains and the betrothal of couples by 'handfasting' or handholding/shaking through the hole.
