Scope and Content View from south-east showing farmsteading at Kilchiaran Farm, Islay, Argyll and Bute Kilchiaran is situated on the west of the Rhinns peninsula of Islay. This distinctive semicircular farmstead was built c.1830, after a new farm was established here to be run by a tenant farmer from Ayrshire. This view shows the threshing mill extension to the barn on the northern side of the courtyard. The threshing machine was powered by water running beneath, and turning, the iron waterwheel against the wall. On the right is the sluice gate which controlled the level of water in the mill pond just north of the steading. After passing through the waterwheel, the water ran underneath the steading and emerged on the south side of the cattle-court. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
