Scope and Content View of waterwheel at farmsteading of Kilchiaran Farm, Islay, Argyll and Bute Kilchiaran is situated on the west of the Rhinns peninsula of Islay. This distinctive semicircular farmstead was built c.1830, after a new farm was established here to be run by a tenant farmer from Ayrshire. This shows the waterwheel which powered the threshing machine within the mill extension of the barn. The water runs under the wheel causing it to turn in the opposite direction to the flow of water. This is known as an undershot waterwheel. A sluice gate controlled the flow of water in a lade from the mill pond just north of the steading. After passing through the waterwheel, the water ran underneath the steading and the tail race emerged on the south side of the cattle-court. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
