Scope and Content Gravestone of Alexander Grinton and Janet Ingrum, Carriden Old Churchyard, Falkirk This gravestone commemorates Alexander Grinton, who died in 1760 aged 60. The epitaph notes that Alexander held the tenancy at Drum farm, on the eastern side of Bo'ness. His wife, Janet and his infant grandson, James Wood are also buried here. A finely carved winged cherub symbolises the soul's heavenward ascent. The grotesque Green Man carving beneath signifies renewal and regeneration of life, probably an allusion to the resurrection of the dead at the Day of Judgement. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
