Scope and Content View from Eithne's grave, Eileach an Naimh, Argyll and Bute The church established in the Irish colony of Dál Riata (Argyll) during the 6th century by Columba and others was strongly influenced by the monastic tradition as developed in Egypt and Syria. The early cross-incised stone on the left is situated on an elevated position within a circular kerbed enclosure. It is a 'special grave' and has been traditionally identified as the burial place of Columba's mother, Eithne. The remains of this monastic settlement include a stone beehive cell of the type found at Irish hermitages, a grave-enclosure and a series of larger enclosures. There are also the remains of a medieval church. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
