Scope and Content Early illustration of Port Ellen Distillery, from survey drawing of Port Ellen Harbour Situated in the planned village of Port Ellen, the distillery was founded in 1825 by A K Mackay and Co. Like most distilleries on Islay, it was situated near a harbour, and was in fact converted from a malt mill. It boasts one of the earliest surviving malt kiln-barns on the island, probably dating from the 1850s, and also has well-preserved iron steeps in situ. In addition, the white-washed bonded warehouses (1846-1907) are good examples of their type. After changing ownership several times during the 20th century, the distillery fell into disuse in 1929. It reopened 1966-7, with a major re-organisation of the works, but some of the earliest buildings, including the warehouses, were preserved. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
