Scope and Content Braidburn Dairy, Braid Road, Morningside, Edinburgh The Braid estate, one of the large estates that surrounded the old village of Morningside, was a rural area of open fields and countryside that stretched south from the Jordan Burn, the southern boundary of the city of Edinburgh. The Braidburn dairy, now demolished, was a series of long low whitewashed buildings which stood at the bridge over the Braid Burn opposite the entrance to the Hermitage of Braid, the old mansion house of the Braid estate, in Braid Road. In 1814 a carter from Biggar was attacked and robbed near the bridge over the burn. He was saved by Andrew Black, a farrier at the dairy. The two attackers were later hanged near the spot in Braid Road, the last execution in Scotland for highway robbery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
