Scope and Content Raasay House, Clachan Battery and pier, and Raasay steading, Raasay, Highland The island of Raasay lies off the east coast of Skye and was the property of the MacLeods of Raasay until 1843. Later owners used the land for sheep and deer farming. From 1912 until 1919, William Baird and Company worked the rich iron mines on the island. The island was sold to the Scottish Board of Agriculture in 1922. This shows Raasay House (centre), built c.1750 (and altered and enlarged in 1790, 1843 and 1846), with its early 19th century jetty (centre right) close to a defensive battery built during the Napoleonic wars. Behind the house is a walled kitchen garden and, beyond that, a steading. Samuel Johnson (1709-84) and James Boswell (1740-95), famous literary travellers, stayed at Raasay House in 1773. Dr Johnson, in his 'Journey to the Western Isles of Scotland' (1775) said of the house: 'Such a seat of Hospitality amidst the wind and waves fills the imagination with a delightful contrariety of images'.
