Scope and Content Monument to the Duke of Sutherland from north, Beinn A Bhragaidh, Highland This stone column and statue commemorates the 1st Duke of Sutherland (1758-1833). It was built on the summit of Beinn A Bhragaidh in 1837 at the suggestion of James Lock, estate manager. The base was designed by architect William Burn (1789-1870), and the statue was carved by Joseph Theakston (1773-1842) to designs by sculptor Sir Frances Chantrey (1789-1841). This shows the statue in its dramatic position on top of Beinn A Bhragaidh, 360m above sea-level to the north-west of Golspie (part of which can be seen top left). The outline of a c.18th century building can be seen to the right of the statue next to the sweeping curve of the path. The statue was built by 'public subscription' (mostly from tenants) at a cost of £1, 400 16s 8d. The monument stands 33m high, and comprises an octagonal pedestal on a square base of local red sandstone. The statue itself is carved from white Brora stone. The monument has been recently threatened with removal due to its association with the Highland Clearances. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
