Scope and Content Nos 16-24 Greenhill Gardens, Morningside, Edinburgh The area of Greenhill Gardens, a narrow tree-lined street running from Bruntsfield Terrace to Chamberlain Road, was first feued for building in 1840. It was the old road through the Greenhill estate, and retains much of the secluded charm of bygone days. No 16 (far left), built in a Jacobean style, and No 18, in a cottage style, were both under construction in 1849. Nos 20-4, which complete the eastern side of the street, are much plainer, and date from 1859. No 24 was the home of the celebrated sculptor, Sir John Steell, Sculptor-Royal for Scotland. His best-known work, completed in 1852, is the striking equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington that stands in front of Register House. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
