Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating Elizabeth Thom, Cramond churchyard, Edinburgh This gravestone commemorates Elizabeth Thom, wife of a local farmer, who died in 1727 aged 43. Within the pediment, an angel in flight signifies the triumph of the soul over death (symbolised by a skull). The winged cherub symbolises the heavenward ascent of the soul, whilst the skulls and crossbones beneath are emblems of death. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
