Thomas' trade as a tailor is attested by the pair of scissors and tailor's 'goose', a kind of smoothing iron, in the panel beneath the inscription. The figures flanking the inscription are Caryatids, a Classical female figure in the form of a support. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
