Scope and Content 'Homeward', an early 20th-century view of farm workers and horses returning to the village of Swanston, Edinburgh The little farming community of Swanston lies close to the southern boundary of Edinburgh at the foot of the Pentland Hills, surrounded by small woods and open farmland. It is one of Edinburgh's most picturesque villages, and is now a conservation area. The old Swanston Road, formerly little more than a cart track, was the approach to the village from Edinburgh and the north. The village itself, sheltering below the scree slopes of Caerketton Hill, is screened from view on all sides by high trees. The village had, at the turn of the 20th century, nine Clydesdale horses which were used on the land. Each of four pairs was kept by an experienced farm worker, and the single horse, looked after by an apprentice, did all the fetching and carrying. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
