Scope and Content Kitchen and stable blocks, Duddingston House, Milton Road West, Duddingston, Edinburgh Duddingston House, the former manor house of Duddingston Village, has been described as one of the finest 18th-century houses in Britain. It was designed by Sir William Chambers for the 8th Earl of Abercorn, and completed in 1768. In the courtyard to the rear of the house are the stables (right) and the kitchen block, connected to the house by a covered passage. A colonnade with a little building in the form of a chapel, topped by a cupola, closes the courtyard to the west. Duddingston House has no basement, and the house was not provided with any domestic facilities. The kitchen was located in a separate two-storeyed building at the rear of the house, and reached by way of a long corridor. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
