Scope and Content Lochside Cottage, The Causeway, Duddingston Village, Edinburgh The Causeway, Duddingston's main street, is a narrow lane which runs from the gates of the church the length of the village. It has a number of 18th- and 19th-century houses, as well as the village's only public house, the 18th-century Sheep's Heid Inn. Lochside Cottage, an elegant white-painted house, was built in 1787, possibly as a factor's house, by the Earl of Abercorn who owned the land. The door on the garden side has a Gothic fanlight and small triangular pediment. In 1927 the house was sold by the Duke of Abercorn, and the bow wing added. The original stair was replaced by a curving Regency staircase with delicate ironwork and polished wooden handrail brought from Alderston House in East Lothian. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
