Scope and Content Interior, House 8, Village, St Kilda House 8, which belonged to the MacDonald family, was built in the 1860s on the site of an earlier black house. It follows the standard design of the new homes constructed after the 1860 hurricane but has a black house built against its west gable wall. This shows the interior looking west with the doorway on the left. The internal walls have vanished. Originally these would have divided the house into a kitchen and another room leading off either side of a central entrance lobby. In late 1860, a hurricane devastated St Kilda and in the next year the landlord sent craftsmen from the mainland to build new houses. Many of the older black houses remained in service, but no more were built. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
