Scope and Content Interior of north annexe, Black House C, Village, St Kilda Black House C, built during Mackenzie's 1830s reorganisation, was a typical black house, that is a traditional Hebridian house, with thick un-mortared walls and a thatched roof. With House 3, it was the home of the Gillies family until the 1900s. This is the inside of the east wall of the north annexe. A drain runs under the flagstones in the doorway (right). Traces of cement and glass survive in the window (left) suggesting that it was glazed. Neil Mackenzie, minister in 1830-43, brought major changes to the St Kilda. He persuaded the villagers to abandon the run-rig system of allotting land. Instead, they divided the village into plots and built new houses, all connected to a drainage system.
