Scope and Content Duddingston Loch, Duddingston, Edinburgh Duddingston Loch, a small reed-fringed loch lying in a quiet rural setting just outside the boundary of Holyrood Park in the shelter of Arthur's Seat, has been a bird sanctuary since 1925, and provides rich feeding grounds for over 100 species of birds. This view, looking across towards Duddingston Village, shows the boundary wall of the park which runs from the lochside up a long climb to the north to Dunsapie Hill. To the right of Duddingston Church is an octagonal tower, formerly a curling house. Curling, the 'roarin' game', was a popular sport in Edinburgh, particularly with magistrates and councillors, when local lochs froze over in the winter. In 1803 the Duddingston Curling Society was the first club to draw up a code of rules for the game. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
