Scope and Content Entrance, Munro Mausoleum, churchyard of Parish Church, Rosskeen, Highland Rosskeen Parish Church was built in 1830-2 to designs by James Smith of Edinburgh. It replaced an earlier church which was then converted to a burial enclosure. This is the entrance to the Munro Mausoleum, built for the Munros of Newmore in 1664. The iron gate probably dates from work carried out in 1908. Burials inside churches were banned in 1581. Wealthy families got around this by converting disused religious structures into mausolea, by adding burial-aisles to churches, and, in the 17th century, by creating separate burial-enclosures.
