Scope and Content Fountain, Main Street, Portmahomack, Highland Portmahomack expanded into a fishing village after 1815 when it acquired a new harbour to replace a ruined stone pier dating from the 17th century. This fountain, on Main Street, was constructed of cast iron in about 1890. It bears a religious inscription in Gaelic. By the mid 19th century, architects commonly used cast-iron structures and decorations. This was because Scotland had become a major iron producer. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
