Scope and Content View of Kilcoy Castle, Ross and Cromarty Kilcoy Castle was built c.1620 by Alexander Mackenzie, fourth son of the Baron of Kintail. It is a Z-plan tower-house built of red sandstone, with a variety of angle turrets, gun loops, armorials, pedimented dormers and corbelled turrets (bartizans). This 1874 view shows the castle in a ruinous state. It was restored and re-roofed in 1890 by the Inverness architects, Alexander Ross and Robert John Macbeth, and is an early example of a sympathetic restoration when it was more fashionable to rebuild. Various features of the original castle are visible in this view, including the crowstepped gables on the main block and the south-east tower. Also visible is the large round north-east tower, with the remains of a pedimented dormer. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
