Scope and Content Drawing room, ground-floor, Ardross Castle, Highland Ardross Castle was built in its present form as a Victorian Scots Baronial mansion in 1880-1 by Alexander Ross incorporating parts of an earlier house. The drawing room's now-vanished carpet and furniture would have been of a high quality to match its fine plaster mouldings and fittings. From the 18th century onwards, it was customary for society ladies to withdraw to a drawing room after a meal, freeing the gentlemen at the table to drink, smoke and talk.
