Scope and Content Main front, Ardross Castle, Highland Ardross Castle was built in its present form as a Victorian Scots Baronial mansion in 1880-1 by Alexander Ross incorporating parts of an earlier house. The main entrance is at the base of the five-storeyed tower (left). Most of the rest of the house is two-storeyed. Historical styles like Scots Baronial, inspired by pre-18th-century architecture, became popular in the 19th century because they reflected national, rather than Classical, architectural traditions.
