Scope and Content Exterior, Ballone Castle, near Portmahomack, Highland Ballone Castle was built in the mid 16th century as the stronghold of the Dunbars of Easter Tarbat. It was extended in the early 17th century. The square tower (right) forms one arm of the castle's Z-plan layout. Its ground floor contained a guard room. The projecting turrets in the angle between the tower and the main block housed spiral staircases. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
