Scope and Content Gun-loop, Ballone Castle, near Portmahomack, Highland Ballone Castle was built in the mid 16th century as the stronghold of the Dunbars of Easter Tarbat. It was extended in the early 17th century. This is one of the castle's gun-loops. Like the other military details, they were probably intended as much for show as for defence.
