Scope and Content Plans, Ballone Castle, near Portmahomack, Highland Ballone Castle was built in the mid 16th century as the stronghold of the Dunbars of Easter Tarbat. It was extended in the early 17th century. The castle is a Z-plan tower-house. The service range (right) was added in the early 17th century Tower-houses were popular with the wealthy gentry from the later Middle Ages until the 17th century. Though not strong enough to withstand a proper military assault with artillery, they provided security against raiders and attacks by rival factions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
