Scope and Content South front of Fairburn Tower, near Muir of Ord, Highland Fairburn Tower, a simple tower-house, was built in the 1540s for Murdoch Mackenzie who had been granted the estate on condition he built a house there. The tower-house is almost square except for the projecting stair-tower containing the ground-floor entrance (facing). This was probably added in the early 17th century.
