Copy of FID 139/10 P

Scope and Content Drawing showing section and plans of Ravenscraig Castle, Kirkcaldy, Fife Originally built for James II's widow, Mary of Gueldres, work began on Ravenscraig Castle in 1460, and continued on and off until it was granted to William Sinclair, Earl of Caithness in 1470. There have been various alterations and additions since. As the section shows, the castle has been built around the natural contour of the land, with two towers at different levels. The plan at entrance level further illustrates this - the east (left) tower stands at second floor, while the west is at basement. The site plan shows the main buildings sited across the neck of the promontory, with associated buildings on the seaward side. Regarded as one of the earliest examples of Scottish artillery fortification, the main building's towers were unusually thick. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
