Scope and Content PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM NO 32: BALMACAAN ALBUM Purchased from MacNaughton's, 1987, who bought it from Phillips Amateur album in black leather, gilt embossed inside and on page edges, with armorial bookplate of Frances Cassillis and inscription reading ‘Cornelia, only daughter of Bradley Martin of New York married William George Robert, 4th Earl of Craven in 1893’. Inscribed: (front) 'Balmacaan', (inside front cover) stamped 'Harrison & Sons, 45 Pall Mall SW'. 'These photographs were all taken with my little Kodak. Cornelia Craven'. The photographs are undated but estimated to c1910. The album contains 35 photographs of Balmacaan House, both interior and exterior views of the house and garden, topography of area, e.g. Glen Urquhart, and family phototgraphs, as well as an image of Kilmore Parish Church. The photographs include ‘the big drawing room showing father's picture’ [a man with gun and stag] ; a portrait of a lady by Sir Johua Reynolds; a family group ‘taken at the front door’ showing ‘my son’ and ‘Craven’; a group including ‘Mrs Baylies, my son and my mother’ and a portrait of Cornelia Craven titled ‘myself’. The album also includes part of a torn press-cutting reporting the wedding of ‘Lord Cassilis to Miss Frances...of Sir Mark McTaggart Stewart of Ardwell...owing to mourning in both...quiet as possible’.
