Scope and Content Main entrance, St Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral, Inverness, Highland St Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral was built to designs by Alexander Ross in 1866-9 in Gothic style. The original plan was grander than the final building and included 30m spires for the two square west towers. This is the main entrance at the west end of the cathedral. In 1875, the space over the door, or tympanum, was filled with a Thomas Earp's carving of Christ and the Apostles. Gothic architecture, the distinctive pointed-arched style of the later Middle Ages, was revived in the late 18th century. It remained popular for public buildings, especially churches, well into the 20th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
