Scope and Content Clock-tower, Citadel, Cromwell Road, Inverness, Highland Inverness in the 17th century was a small town, but strategically important to the government for controlling the Highlands. Its harbour was begun 1648, and the Citadel, a modern fort, was constructed by Cromwell's administration in 1652-7. This clock-tower marks the site of the Citadel, a pentagonal fort built in 1652-8 by Joachim Hane. The fort superseded the town's medieval castle but was demolished in 1660 during the Restoration.
