Scope and Content Lochgorm Railway Works, Inverness, Highland Inverness expanded rapidly in the 19th century after construction of the Caledonian Canal was begun in 1804. Connection to the rail network in 1855 encouraged this trend. Its main industries at the time were ship-building, iron founding and saw-milling. This is the Traction Maintenance Depot of the Lochgorm Railway Works, built from after 1855. In the background, on the left, is a snow-blower track-clearance unit.
