Scope and Content Old Stone Bridge across Ness & Sheriff Court, Castle Hill, Inverness Inverness Sheriff Court House - also known as Inverness Castle - was built to designs by William Burn in 1833-5. The curtain-walls, by Joseph Mitchell, date from 1839. The Jail, now the District Court, was added by Thomas Brown Junior in 1846-8. In the foreground, a seven arch stone bridge is shown spanning the River Ness. This view, from a French travel guidebook, was drawn in about 1838 after the Sheriff Court had been completed but before the curtain walls and Jail had been added to the site. The first known bridge across the Ness was built of oak and was destroyed by Donald, Lord of the Isles. Another wooden bridge lasted up to the mid 17th century when it collapsed and was replaced by a seven arch stone bridge which was swept away in a flood. This was replaced by a suspension bridge and the current bridge is a three arch concrete design. Of further interest is the second image showing a copy of this image onto the fore-edge of an antiquarian book. When the book is fully closed, the image cannot be seen. It is only seen when the pages are spread like this. This was very likely painted on by hand with the books pages held in a clamp of some shape. Our thanks to Alan Grant of Grant & Shaw Ltd., antiquarian bookseller, who provided this image. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
