Scope and Content Haulage winch, Thornbush Slipway, Inverness, Highland Inverness expanded rapidly following construction of the Caledonian Canal (begun in 1804) and connection to the rail network (1855). Its main industries at that period were ship-building, iron founding and saw-milling. This winch was used to drag ships along Thornbush Slipway. This was constructed in 1908 as part of a shipbuilding yard and is covered by a shed of corrugated iron on a steel structure. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
