Scope and Content Waterloo Bridge, Inverness, Highland Inverness expanded rapidly in the 19th century following construction of the Caledonian Canal (begun in 1804) and connection to the rail network (1855). Its main industries at that period were ship-building, iron founding and saw-milling. Waterloo Bridge was constructed in 1894-6 by the Rose Street Foundry to designs by John A Mackenzie with Murdoch Paterson as consultant. The piers are cast iron. By the mid 19th century, architects commonly used cast-iron structures and decorations. This was because Scotland had become a major iron producer, thanks largely to Neilson's efficient hot-blast furnace, patented in 1828. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
