Scope and Content Finials, Cumberland Street, Edinburgh Cumberland Street, at the foot of the hill running down from Queen Street Gardens, was built 1824-8 to provide housing of lesser quality than its southern counterpart, Northumberland Street, for the lower middle and better-off artisan classes. These finials, the top part of the railings, typify some of the imaginative ironwork of the New Town in the late Georgian period. Georgian New Town street railings commonly retained the spear-head motif which had been popular in the early 18th century. These were often punctuated by a selection of ornamental cast-iron finials such as the thistle, pineapple and baluster designs. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
