Scope and Content Mackerchar Hall, Cathedral Square, Fortrose, Highland Fortrose began as a settlement belonging to the canons of Fortrose Cathedral. It became a royal burgh in 1590, but in 1691 was said to be still a 'little village'. By the later 19th century, the town was an established holiday resort. Mackerchar Hall was built in 1881 by John Robertson as a Drill Hall. Its details and features, including the rounded arches, are influenced by the Romanesque style of the Middle Ages.
