Scope and Content Exterior, St Duthus Collegiate Church, Castle Brae, Tain, Highland St Duthus Collegiate Church was founded in 1487 by Thomas Hay, Bishop of Ross, after a suggestion by King James III. It served as the parish church until 1814. It was heavily restored in 1859-70 and again in the 1890s. The church is surrounded by a graveyard containing monuments from the 17th century and later. Collegiate churches were served by colleges of priests or canons who prayed for the founder's soul, a form of medieval spritual insurance. By the later Middle Ages, many such churches were endowed in preference to the larger, more impersonal monasteries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
