Scope and Content East end of interior, St Duthus Collegiate Church, Castle Brae, Tain, Highland St Duthus Collegiate Church was founded in 1487 by Thomas Hay, Bishop of Ross, on behalf of King James III. Afte the Reformation, it served as the parish church until 1814. It was heavily restored in 1859-70 and again in the 1890s. This is the east end of the church. The blocked round-arched doorway (right) originally led into a vestry. Collegiate churches were served by colleges of priests or canons who prayed for the founder's soul, a form of medieval spritual insurance. By the later Middle Ages, many such churches were endowed in preference to the larger, more impersonal monasteries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
