Scope and Content Mid 19th century view of Tain, Highland Tain, a medieval place of pilgrimage, became a royal burgh by 1567. It expanded from the late 18th century onwards during which time the layout of its streets was rationalised. This shows Tain in the mid 19th century. The steeple of the early 18th century tolbooth (right of centre) dominates the townscape. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
