Scope and Content Railway Station, Station Road, Tain, Highland Tain, a medieval place of pilgrimage, became a royal burgh by 1567. It expanded from the late 18th century onwards during which time the layout of its streets was rationalised. Tain Railway Station was built in 1864 by Joseph Mitchell for the Highland Railway. Its three blocks are laid out in an H-plan with cast iron columns supporting a veranda roof between the end blocks. By the mid 19th century, architects commonly used cast-iron structures and decorations. This was because Scotland had become a major iron producer. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
