Scope and Content Dunkeld Cathedral, Dunkeld, Perth and Kinross Dunkeld Cathedral stands on the site of an early Christian church. Most of the surviving structure dates from the 14th and 15th centuries, though the cathedral was begun in the 13th century. It is ruined and roofless, but it is still an impressive site. This image shows the north wall of the Atholl family vault, within the cathedral. The finely-carved stone monument features the coat of arms in the triangular panel at the top. Dunkeld was an ecclesiastical centre as early as 848-9 when Kenneth MacAlpin took relics of St Columba to a church he had had built. By 943, St Andrews had taken over as the major religious centre. Dunkeld was revived in the 12th century by Alexander I. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
