Copy of A 57442

Scope and Content Firing-berth chimney, curing yard, Bank Row, Wick, Highland The curing yard to the rear of Bank Row was constructed in about 1830. Its complex includes a kiln for smoking fish to make kippers, and a cooperage for making barrels to transport the finished product. This is the chimney of the coopers' firing-berth. Iron hoops were heated here so that they expanded. While still hot, the hoops were forced onto the barrel. They contracted as they cooled, so clamping the barrel's staves together.
