Scope and Content Firing-berth, curing yard, Bank Row, Wick, Highland The curing yard to the rear of Bank Row was constructed in about 1830. Its complex includes a kiln for smoking fish to make kippers, and a cooperage for making barrels to transport the finished product. This is the interior of the coopers' firing-berth.Iron hoops were heated here so that they expanded. While still hot, the hoops were forced onto the barrel. They contracted as they cooled, so clamping the barrel's staves together. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
