Scope and Content Argyle Square, Wick, Highland Wick, a royal burgh since 1589, remained a small town until after 1801 when Thomas Telford planned the harbour and new town on behalf of the British Fisheries Society. By the middle of the 19th century, Wick was Europe's largest herring port. These houses on Argyle Square date from the 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
