Scope and Content Stair-tower, The Towers, East Quality Street, Dysart, Fife The Towers was originally built in 1589, the date inscribed over the entrance. Its design and construction is similar to that of rural tower-houses of the same period. The stair-tower contains a staircase providing access to its caphouse and to the upper floors of the main block. Its gables are crow-stepped. Dysart, a pre-existing settlement on the outskirts of Kirkcaldy, became a burgh of barony in 1510 and a royal burgh in 1533. Originally a salt-making centre, it grew into a thriving port for exporting coal and fish. It declined from the 18th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
