Scope and Content Pictish cross-slab from Meigle, Perth and Kinross This stone is one of over thirty cross-slabs and sculptured stones found in or near the churchyard at Meigle. Most of the stones were discovered during the 19th century, many having been reused as building blocks in the church walls or a nearby kiln. This view is of the back of a fragment of a carved stone found in 1889 outside what is now the museum. At the top is a symbol which may represent a pair of compasses. Below are two animals facing one another. The carved stones at Meigle form one of the most important collections of Pictish and Early Christian sculpture in eastern Scotland. Most are carved in high relief, and a common theme is violence - between animals or men and animals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
