Scope and Content Sculptured stone from Miegle, Perth and Kinross This stone is one of over thirty cross-slabs and sculptured stones found in or near the churchyard at Meigle. Most of the stones were discovered during the 19th century, many having been reused as building blocks in the church walls or a nearby kiln. This sculptured stone, a recumbent grave-slab, is carved on both sides and features a socket in its upper face, possibly to hold an upright cross. Here, the carvings include various beasts and figures, including a bird interlaced with a man. The carved stones at Meigle form one of the most important collections of Pictish and Early Christian sculpture in eastern Scotland. Most are carved in high relief, and a common theme is violence - between animals or men and animals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
