Scope and Content George Hotel, High Street, Newburgh, Fife Newburgh became a burgh dependent on Lindores Abbey in 1266, and a royal burgh in 1631. The main industries were salmon fishing and weaving until 1891 when the Tayside Floorcloth Company came to the burgh. The George Hotel was built in 1811. Its door surround has Doric pilasters or flattened pillars. Doric is one of the mathematically defined architectural styles or Orders used by the Ancient Greeks and Romans during the Classical period which were rediscovered by Renaissance architects and remained fashionable until the 20th century.
