Meigle Pictish cross slab (No.4, front)

SC 397539

Description Meigle Pictish cross slab (No.4, front)

Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number SC 397539

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of B 1500

Scope and Content Pictish cross-slab from Meigle, Perth and Kinross This stone is one of over thirty cross-slabs and sculptured stones found in or near the churchyard at Meigle. Most of the stones were discovered during the 19th century, many having been reused as building blocks in the church walls or a nearby kiln. This image shows two fragments of stone, found in 1858 during the dismantling of the malt-kiln at Templehall, which belong to the same cross-slab. The front face is carved with a fine interlace-decorated cross surrounded by animals and more interlace. The carved stones at Meigle form one of the most important collections of Pictish and Early Christian sculpture in eastern Scotland. Most are carved in high relief, and a common theme is violence - between animals or men and animals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
